Memorial Parks & Avenues

Telegraph Park

The new park is situated on what was previously vacant land next to the Telstra Exchange building on Brock Street, just off Euroa’s main street, and pays tribute to the 1165 volunteers from the district who served in World War I. The names are inscribed on five honour boards in the park area, surrounded by a gorgeous new landscape, garden area, seating and a new public toilet block.

The Rotary Club of Euroa, in conjunction with the Victorian Government, Strathbogie Shire Council, Telstra Corporation and local community groups and individuals, officially opened Telegraph Park on Sunday 29 April 2018.

Euroa and District Avenue of Honour

In August 2009 it was wonderful to see the Avenue of Honour at last in the first stages of being replanted with nothing more fitting than the Australian Native Flowering Gum. The Avenue in Euroa initially commem- orated three Boer War soldiers, the three local Victoria Cross recipients and one hundred and thirty soldiers who did not come home from World War I.

These soldiers came from not only from Euroa but also from Violet Town, Strathbogie, Creighton’s Creek, Pranjip, Ruffy, Locksley and Longwood.

Euroa’s Avenue was planted through a committee being formed which raised monies by public subscrip- tion, as well as a generous donation of the trees by the Shire Council. Councillor T J Nolan was chairman and Arthur Hemley secretary.

The Avenue, from Anderson Street to the Castle Creek Bridge, was planted both sides with plane trees and opened in 1936 by Lady Huntingdale.

Victoria Cross Memorial

Three plinths with bronze statues and plaques commemorate Victoria Cross recipients from the Euroa district.
Lieutenant (later Major) Frederick Tubb and Corporal Alexander Burton won their Victoria Crosses in the Lone Pine trenches at Gallipoli in August 1915 repelling a Turkish counter-attack - Burton was killed in the attack and awarded his medal posthumously. Tubb died on the Western Front in France two years later.
